“I had a lot of fun this morning photographing the Model 186K Rönisch grand piano. I know to many people it probably just looks like any other piano... it's not. Consider the slow process of so many thousands of components coming together with the utmost precision, sourcing materials from all over the world in the pursuit of absolute perfection, the immense value placed on genuine craftsmanship and traditional design that has been passed through many generations (for more than 170 years!), and even the 20-odd tonnes of string tension exerted on the frame for the piano's entire life span (potentially 100+ years with instruments of this pedigree) ... all done with the purest of missions: to make something indisputably beautiful. It's more than just quality German engineering. This is a tool that exists solely to bring joy and magic into people's lives. It also functions equally well as an outlet for any darker emotions that are not-so-joyful or magical.
Playing this piano feels less like a challenge and more like a friend that is backing you up and helping to articulate the more delicate nuances of your ideas that you weren't sure how best to express. It feels like an easy and natural partnership, as if it could finish your sentences for you. It is an absolute joy to play, a challenge to step away from, and it is wonderful to think of how many other moments will be brightened and lifted by this piano over its lifespan. It was such a treat to sit with it today.
In fact, the term "grand" piano hardly does this justice. It is a grand, superb, striking, and glorious piano and I know it'll bring decades of joy to whichever home it ends up in.”
